Message from our third meeting of the New Year:
- But what happened at our first two meetings you ask?:
- Attendance at our Jan 3 meeting was extremely light hence, no e-Bulletin.
- Attendance at our Jan 10 meeting was good however, our e-Bulletin writer was delinquent. Briefly though, Don was back at the helm after his ski/touring trip to Austria and London with his daughter. Arthur Anderson was our guest. Main items (at least recalled!) were that ShelterBox (SB) was selected as our club's charity for our 2013 golf tourney promotional material and we agreed to donate at least 75% of our tourney proceeds to SB this year. We also chatted about charity support in general and the need for us to decide where to focus our efforts going forward...a discussion to be continued. Scott circulated this past year's Nutcracker brochure - which highlights our club's current and past contributions - and shows a 1/4 page advertisement for our club. Also, our first Board meeting of the New Year will be Tuesday, January 22 at Don's house and everyone is welcome to attend with $10 per meal going to landmines...let Don know.
- Don mentioned some agenda items from last night's meeting of Toronto area club presidents:
- The proposal for an initiative that would contribute 10% of each club's proceeds to fund a club's one-time project was discussed at some length...there would be 18 clubs so this would take place over an 18 year period. Still being discussed positively. Some talk about what this would mean as far as committing future boards...discussion to be continued.
- The Rotary Food Initiative to End Student Hunger in Toronto schools was also on the agenda and discussed.
- Volunteer planning for the 2018 RI meeting in Toronto was mentioned including a suggestion to hire workers to free up Toronto area's Rotarians to actively participate in the meeting itself.
- Also, there was the reminder for clubs to consider sponsoring students to attend the Rotary Peace conference in early March...$100 each.
- There is no news to report as yet on the results of the TV Auction. Danielle will check into.
- Scott updated on last night's Golf Tourney meeting. Things are coming along nicely. They'll be negotiating with the golf club next week. Looking at $250 per golfer and $225 for the early bird. Thursday, August 15 is the day. Flyers should be ready mid-February. The 3 projects decided so far are all international involving Guyana, Ghana and ShelterBox. ShelterBox will be asked to set up a tent etc. and have a speaker, Suzanne will do her great gourmet food thing and Robin's skills have already been solicited to organise the volunteers. A radio host from Z103.5 will be the MC. More to come.
- Scott also asked us to keep an eye out for the ads for our club that have been regularly placed in the local editions of SNAP.
- Suzanne M. announced she is doing the Shakespeare thing again this year. A fundraising dinner at Suzanne's is in the works. Perhaps a Wednesday night?
- Happy Bucks and 50/50:
- Robin gave a loonie as she will be receiving a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for her volunteer work at an upcoming ceremony at Swansea Town Hall. Well done Robin!!!
- Hugh gave a loonie for having booked his flight to the April 2013 ShelterBox Response Team Assessment Training in Mason, Texas and for having plowed once through the reading material for the course.
- Carole drew the 9 of hearts...the pot lives.
- A reminder of the Board meeting at Don's house (not at Scott's hospital bedside) next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. There was a good show of hands but please confirm to Don so he has the right amount of food.
- The next Blood Donor Clinic at Swansea Town Hall is February 9, 2013. We need 4 volunteers for the day.
- That's it! (Apologies for any omissions.)
