In a nutshell:

  • Paul Pereira visited us this morning.  Paul is interested in learning more about Rotary.  Paul is a law student - soon to be articling.
  • Our guests this morning were S/Sgt Phil Van Andel, Councillor Gord Perks and Mary, his assistant.
  • A surprise visitor this morning was Richard Clarke!  Richard came out east for the polio celebration in Ottawa.  Richard gave an update on the success of the recent penny fundraising for polio, and the involvement of the federal government and Bill Gates in matching the funds raised.  Between $6 and 7 million was raised!
  • President Don presented a cheque from the club for $500 to S/Sgt Van Andel for 11 Division's Community Safety Scholarship program.  Phil updated the club on the fact that 11 Division has awarded two $1,000 scholarships this year and has a little left over to seed next year's scholarships.
  • Don indicated that there is a meeting this weekend for new club executives.  Don is going and if you're interested in going too, speak to Don.
  • Gord Perks, spoke to us passionately about the need for an LRT system.  Gord indicated that an LRT system is critical to Toronto's future and indicated some possible ways and means of funding such a system.   He encourages us all to spread the word that the LRT is the most cost effective option for public transit.
  • Danielle circulated the TV Auction thank you note that is going to be sent out to our donors and sponsors - looks good!
  • Robin reminded us of the upcoming early bird deadline for the Golf Tournament!
  • Don won the draw but not the pot.
